David Baldacci wurde am 5. August 1960 in Richmond, Virginia, geboren und wuchs in einem Vorort von Richmond auf. Er studierte Politikwissenschaften an der Virginia Commonwealth University und Jura an der University of Virginia, wo er 1986 seinen Juris Doctor erhielt. Anschließend arbeitete er als Anwalt in Washington, D.C. und spezialisierte sich auf Strafrecht und Wirtschaftsrecht.

Baldacci veröffentlichte seinen ersten Roman "Absolute Power" im Jahr 1996 (der später auch sehr erfolgreich mit Clint Eastwood in der Hauptrolle als Film adaptiert wurde). Seitdem hat er eine Vielzahl von Romanen geschrieben, die sich häufig mit Themen wie Korruption, Machtmissbrauch, Rache und Verschwörungen beschäftigen. Baldacci greift in vielen seiner Romane politische und gesellschaftliche Themen auf und setzt sich kritisch mit der Regierung und dem Justizsystem auseinander.

Baldacci hat neben diveresen Standalones ein paar Serien verfasst, darunter die "Will Robie"-Serie um den ehemaligen CIA-Agenten Will Robie, der zum Auftragsmörder wird und Jobs für die Regierung erledigt, die Privatdetektiv-Serie "King und Maxwell", die "Amos Decker"-Serie um einen ehemaligen Polizisten, der aufgrund eines Kopfschusses ein ungewöhnliches Gedächtnis hat, und eine Serie um den Militärermittler John Puller, der für die Army Criminal Investigation Division arbeitet.
